Western US Braces for Record-Breaking Heat Wave

A severe heat wave is sweeping across five western US states, with millions of residents warned to avoid prolonged sun exposure due to extreme temperatures.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple Extreme Heat Warnings covering areas in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, and Nevada. Dangerously high temperatures are expected through the weekend and into early next week, posing a serious health risk to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions.

Residents in the Seattle area can expect temperatures to reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, with limited overnight relief. The warning remains in effect until Tuesday morning. Forecasts advise residents to stay hydrated, stay indoors, and avoid leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.

In Southern California’s Coachella Valley and San Diego County deserts, temperatures could soar to 112 degrees. In Arizona, areas including Tucson and Phoenix are experiencing highs between 102 and 112 degrees, prompting authorities to urge residents to take precautions during outdoor activities.

Nevada residents can expect temperatures as high as 120 degrees in Las Vegas and Death Valley. The warnings extend to parts of Oregon and Washington, where temperatures are predicted to reach 97-103 degrees with limited overnight relief.

Officials are urging people to take extra precautions when working outdoors, wear lightweight clothing, and check on neighbors and vulnerable populations. Public cooling shelters are available in some areas, and residents can contact local resources such as 2-1-1 for guidance.
