Confusion Surrounds ‘Healthy’ Nutrition Claims as World Health Organization Provides Guidance.
A recent update by the Food and Drug Administration did little to clarify what constitutes a “healthy” nutrient content claim, primarily targeting packaged foods. However, the joint statement from the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations offers clarity on the importance of a healthy diet. A healthy diet promotes health, growth, and development, supports active lifestyles, prevents nutrient deficiencies and excesses, and reduces the risk of communicable and noncommunicable diseases. To determine a healthy diet, several key principles can be applied.
