Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs aim to create an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel accepted and included. These initiatives focus on promoting diversity, ensuring equality, and fostering a culture of inclusion.
In 2021-23, Ohio’s Department of Development defined DEI as the combination of:
* Diversity: A state of having different elements or variety in experiences, identities, and perspectives.
* Inclusion: The practice of understanding and applying diversity to improve work culture and influence the way organizations serve their clients.
* Equality: The state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
Many organizations have adopted DEI standards to support underrepresented groups and create a welcoming environment. Research shows that DEI programs encourage behaviors such as critical thinking, reducing harmful stereotypes, and improving communication skills.
However, some companies have scaled back their DEI policies. Notably, President Donald Trump announced the end of government DEI programs in an executive order. Companies like Target, Amazon, Walmart, Meta, and McDonald’s have also reduced or eliminated their DEI initiatives.
Despite this, many companies continue to prioritize DEI. Apple, Costco, Ben & Jerry’s, E.l.f Beauty, and JP Morgan are examples of organizations that remain committed to their DEI programs.
