What Your Toenails Reveal About Your Health

A doctor has revealed that your toenails can tell you a lot about your health. Sheena Bagga, a pharmacist prescriber from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, says that checking the condition of your nails can highlight issues such as infections, diabetes, and even cancer.

Healthy nails should have a smooth surface with light pink or translucent coloration without much variation in shade or hue. However, yellow discolouration can indicate a toenail infection, while dark nail stripes may be a sign of Subungual Melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Swollen toes could indicate gout, which is more likely to occur in people who are overweight. White spots on the nails can be caused by a deficiency of protein, zinc, or iron. In rare cases, fully white nails may be an indicator of a systematic illness in another part of the body, such as liver cirrhosis or hyperthyroidism.

Blue discolouration may be a sign that your toes are not getting proper circulation due to Raynaid’s disease, which causes narrowing of the smaller arteries. Itchy toes can be a symptom of Athlete’s Foot, a common fungal infection that shows as itchy white patches between your toes.

Ms Bagga advises people to inspect their toenails regularly and to seek medical attention if they notice any unusual changes or symptoms. Regular exercise, maintaining good nail and foot hygiene, and a healthy diet can help prevent many of these conditions.

By paying attention to the condition of your nails, you may be able to identify potential health issues before they become serious problems.
