What’s Behind Coca-Cola Machine Cameras?

Coca-Cola Freestyle machines with touchscreens allow users to mix and match over 100 drinks. Above the touchscreen is a small camera lens embedded with technology that can track motion and facial recognition. However, these cameras are not currently in use.

According to patent applications from former employees, it’s believed that Coca-Cola is using these cameras for customer sentiment research. Data collected from more than 15,000 Freestyle machines around the US includes information on user interactions, such as drink preferences and purchase times.

While facial recognition isn’t being used, the collection of data raises concerns about consumer privacy. Coca-Cola has invested over $1 billion in designing its Freestyle machines, with data collection likely to be a key revenue stream for the company.
