WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Advanced Chat Privacy that allows users to block participants from sharing the contents of a conversation. This opt-in setting is available for both traditional chats and groups, and once enabled, it will prevent anyone in the chat from exporting content outside of the app.
The feature also prevents smartphone auto-downloading of media and stops integration with AI assistants. However, it’s unclear if this feature prevents screenshotting.
WhatsApp recommends using this feature in sensitive group conversations, such as support groups or community organizing chats. The platform claims to be constantly adding more protections, but the initial rollout is already available globally.
As a privacy-focused platform, WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption and other security measures like disappearing messages and device authentication. The new feature builds upon these existing features, providing an additional layer of protection for users’ conversations.
