Where Are the Kansas City Chiefs Based?

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to appear in their third consecutive Super Bowl, with fans around the world eager to learn more about this NFL powerhouse. But one question remains – where exactly is Kansas City located? The answer lies in the city’s split identity.

Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas are two separate cities that make up the Kansas City Metropolitan area. Despite sharing a name, the two cities have distinct characteristics. While both are part of this larger region, they differ significantly in terms of population (Missouri: 510,704 vs Kansas: 152,933) and geography.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who will play Super Bowl 59 against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, are based in Missouri. Their home stadium, Arrowhead Stadium, is also located there. This distinction may seem surprising, given that a city called Kansas exists in both states. However, according to historical records, the name “Kansas City” was first used in Missouri in 1838.

Interestingly, the Kansas side of the state line incorporated its own town, Kansas City, Kansas, in 1872 – nearly three decades after the Missouri city was established. This move allowed city leaders on the Kansas side to capitalize on the success of their Missouri counterpart.
