Whistleblower Alters Millions with Social Security Number Data Breach Allegation

A whistleblower complaint filed on Tuesday alleges that the Department of Government Efficiency uploaded all federal Social Security numbers to an unsecured server in June, creating significant security vulnerabilities.

According to the complaint, a live copy of the entire country’s Social Security information is being held by a vulnerable cloud environment without proper oversight or tracking. This database contains sensitive data such as names, birthplaces and citizenship information, which could be exploited by malicious actors for widespread identity theft.

The alleged breach puts over 300 million Americans’ Social Security data at risk. However, the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims that it stores all personal data in secure environments with robust safeguards in place to protect vital information.

The SSA says that the data mentioned in the complaint is stored in a long-standing environment used by the agency and has multiple levels of access control, including high-level career officials. Despite this, the whistleblower alleges that he had raised concerns about potential remedial action within the agency without any response.
