Amazon has denied plans to display the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariffs next to product prices on its site, following a White House press briefing that described the move as a “hostile and political act”.
The plan was reportedly set to show tariff surcharges alongside total prices for certain products. However, Amazon spokespersons clarified that the plan was never approved and would not be implemented.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt sparked controversy by expressing her disapproval, stating that Amazon’s decision was “not a surprise” given past reports about the company’s ties to China. She also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of inflation.
The move comes as Bezos has been seen as trying to curry favor with Trump since his election victory. Despite this, Amazon’s business has faced strain due to Trump’s tariffs plans, particularly the 145% duty on Chinese imports.
Amazon shares initially dropped 2% before recovering by noon after the White House press secretary’s comments.
