WHO Calls for Immediate Release of Detained Gaza Hospital Director

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the immediate release of Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. The demand comes after Israeli forces raided the facility last week, detaining Abu Safiya.

Other human rights organizations and his family also support his release. WHO Director-General Tedros stated that two hospitals in Gaza City, al-Ahli and al-Wafaa, were targeted in attacks, condemning the transformation of Gaza’s hospitals into “battlegrounds”.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) accused Hamas of using al-Wafaa facility for militant activity and confirmed a strike on the building. The IDF did not respond to a request for comment about al-Ahli Hospital.

Separately, Syria’s de facto leader Hayat Tahrir al-Sham chief Ahmed al-Sharaa said it may take up to four years to organize elections in the country, while Iran detained Italian journalist Cecilia Sala on “violating laws of the Islamic Republic”.
