The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that its main warehouse and staff residence in Deir al-Bahl were attacked by Israeli forces on Monday, amid a deteriorating security situation in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli tanks rolled into the central city for the first time since the start of the 21-month conflict. The WHO’s warehouse was damaged due to explosions and fires caused by an attack. Desperate crowds later looted the site.
The WHO staff residence also came under attack three times, exposing staff members and their families to grave danger. Women and children were forced to evacuate while men were handcuffed, interrogated, and screened at gunpoint.
Four people were detained, with three released afterwards. The WHO said it faces severe constraints due to the non-functioning warehouse and depleted medical supplies in Gaza. Despite this, the organization plans to remain in Deir al-Balah to deliver operations.
The WHO is appalled by the hazardous conditions faced by humanitarian workers and health personnel. It calls for the release of a detained staff member, protection of its premises, and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
