Whooping Cough Cases Rise in Eau Claire County, Health Officials Warn

Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Eau Claire County, with 26 reported cases so far this season, compared to just one case last year. The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the highly contagious infection.

Public health nurse Kristy Polden advises that getting a TDAP vaccine can help lessen symptoms of whooping cough. She also recommends testing for the illness if someone experiences a dry, hacky cough, as antibiotics may be necessary to treat it.

If diagnosed with whooping cough, residents are advised to isolate themselves from others for about five days and monitor their cough after taking antibiotics. Additionally, washing hands regularly and covering the mouth when coughing can help prevent the spread of the infection.
