A recent surge in whooping cough cases has resulted in two infant deaths in Louisiana, sparking concerns about vaccine-preventable illnesses spreading across the country. The state’s health department reported 110 cases so far this year, a significant increase from last year’s 154 cases.
The US is experiencing a similar trend, with cases rising nationwide after plummeting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of cases last year reached 35,000, the highest in over eight years. Experts point to declining vaccination rates for childhood diseases as a contributing factor.
A recent shift by Louisiana’s health department has also raised eyebrows. Two months ago, they announced an end to vaccine promotion efforts, which may have contributed to the growing outbreak. Similar declines are being seen in neighboring states, including Texas, where a measles outbreak is underway.
