Why 49ers Can’t Make Blockbuster Trade for Myles Garrett

The San Francisco 49ers’ disastrous trade for Trey Lance in 2021 has left them with limited draft pick capital, making it unlikely they can make a blockbuster deal for Myles Garrett. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch plan to stick to their long-term vision, prioritizing sustained success over short-term gains.

The Browns pass rusher, who is the NFL’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year, released a statement requesting a trade from Cleveland, citing his desire to win a Super Bowl as his primary goal. However, acquiring Garrett under his current contract wouldn’t be prohibitively expensive for the 49ers during an offseason where they’re expected to sign quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive contract extension.

The problem lies in the draft pick capital required to make such a move. Browns general manager Andrew Berry has stated that he won’t deal Garrett even for two first-round picks, and the 49ers can’t afford to make a similar offer after investing heavily in Lance four years ago.

The 49ers’ decision to trade up to select Lance at No. 3 overall had roster-wide consequences that showed up in their 6-11 season this year. The team’s diminished depth and injuries to key players led to the deterioration of the bottom of the roster, which will be a concern if they decide to make a big move for Garrett.

With a roster loaded with older high-priced players and only a few younger standouts, the 49ers would need to surrender much of their early round capital to acquire Garrett. This approach would go against the team’s philosophy under Lynch and Shanahan, who prioritize long-term sustainability over short-term gains.

While acquiring Garrett could give the 49ers a boost next season, it’s unclear whether they’ll be willing to make such an all-in move. The Browns have maintained that they won’t deal Garrett, but if Cleveland decides to entertain offers, the 49ers may need to consider making a big splash.
