I’m not a fan of WhatsApp or Viber’s cluttered interfaces, which prioritize features over simplicity. But one app stands out from the crowd: Signal. While it lacks popularity, its focus on messaging and security makes it an attractive alternative.
I believe a messaging app should be mainly focused on messaging and calls – with security as the next priority, not extra features like news feeds or sticker markets. Both Viber and WhatsApp offer these distractions, which clutter my experience.
Signal, on the other hand, offers three clean tabs: Chats, Calls, and Stories (which I can easily disable). It’s free, ad-free, and secure with end-to-end encryption and tracker blocking. Its user base is smaller than its competitors’, but this means less spam and unwanted messages.
While Signal has some advantages over WhatsApp and Viber, its lack of popularity makes it harder to recommend to friends and family. I’ve convinced a few friends to join, including my partner, but I’m not sure how long that will last.
