Why Taiwan Matters to US National Security

The United States’ strategic interest in Taiwan is often misunderstood by Americans. Only 34 percent can find Taiwan on a map, and most people are unaware of the country’s importance to U.S. national security. This lack of understanding is critical for preventing or winning a protracted war over Taiwan.

U.S. officials have not explained why Taiwan is worth defending, despite President Joe Biden’s statement that America will defend the island. The silence on this topic may be due to political sensitivities with China, but it damages resolve and deterrence, making war more likely.

The stakes of conflict in Taiwan are crucial for national resolve. A Chinese attack on Taiwan would disrupt critical supply chains, especially semiconductors, causing immense economic harm to U.S. citizens. Losing Taiwan would also alter the geostrategic landscape, generating long-term economic damage that outweighs investments required to deter a war and win one.

Geostrategic considerations provide the strongest case for why Taiwan matters. Controlling Taiwan would allow China to dominate key trade routes and regional stability. The United States needs sufficient resolve to credibly deny seizure of Taiwan while enduring a protracted war, not superior resolve.

U.S. officials should articulate the stakes in Taiwan and rally public support without undermining the “one China” policy. By clearly explaining America’s interests, they can strengthen American resolve and deter aggression. This approach would ensure that the United States maintains its regional influence and secures its national security interests.
