“Why Users Are Ditching Windows for Linux”

For years, Linux was a niche operating system known only to tech enthusiasts. But that’s changing. Many non-techie users are now considering installing Linux on their personal computers as an alternative to Windows.

Google Trends data shows a surge in interest in installing Linux, with global search volume increasing by five times over the past few months. This indicates that people are not just curious but actively looking for a way to switch.

One reason for this shift is growing dissatisfaction with the direction Windows is taking. Microsoft’s integration of AI features like Copilot into the operating system has led to criticism. Additionally, the end of software support for Windows 10 and hardware requirements for Windows 11 have left users with an uncomfortable choice.

Many computers that are not obsolete still struggle with the new operating system. This has forced some people to look for alternatives. Linux offers several benefits, including improved performance on older hardware, control over what is installed, and increased privacy.

Linux is technically a kernel, created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds as an open-source project. It’s now used by billions of smartphones through Android, dominates supercomputing, and powers most web servers. Popular distributions like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Fedora offer familiar desktops with start menus and taskbars.

The appeal of Linux goes beyond ideology; it’s practical. Users appreciate the performance, absence of advertisements, and flexibility to customise their system. Installing Linux has become easier than ever, with most users able to get started in under 30 minutes.

However, Linux is not perfect for everyone. Some software is only available on Windows, and hardware compatibility can be a challenge. But as Windows continues to evolve toward tighter hardware requirements and deeper AI push, switching to Linux just makes sense for many people.
