Wicked Tops SAG Awards Nominations Ahead of Big Names

The 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been announced, and “Wicked” leads the pack with five nominations, including Best Ensemble and individual nods for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey. The musical’s Oscar chances are rising after its strong showing, although some big names were snubbed.

Notable snubs include Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman, who missed out on nominations for their respective films “Maria” and “Babygirl.” Other high-profile actresses like Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Fernanda Torres were also overlooked. The film “The Last Showgirl,” which stars Jamie Lee Curtis, made an unexpected nomination in the Supporting Female Actor category.

The SAG Awards are considered one of the most predictive Oscar forecasters, with their picks often coming close to mirroring those of the Academy Awards. The last three Best Ensemble winners went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, and many of the SAG acting winners over the past few years have also won at the Oscars.

The nominations also revealed some surprises in the competition, particularly among the directors’ guild, where “Dune: Part Two” director Denis Villeneuve was snubbed. The Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on February 23 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and will be streamed live on Netflix.
