A large-scale internet outage occurred on Thursday, affecting many popular websites and services. The issue highlighted the fragility of the internet ecosystem when key providers malfunction.
The outage impacted sites such as Twitch, Gmail, Discord, Nintendo Switch Online, Spotify, and dozens more. It’s unclear what caused the problem, but Cloudflare initially blamed Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for its issues.
Google Cloud reported problems with its API management system and stated that it had been fully resolved within three hours. The company apologized for the disruption and promised a full incident report in the coming days.
Cloudflare also took responsibility, stating that while a third-party vendor’s failure was the root cause of the outage, it ultimately bears blame for its chosen dependencies. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the cause, the internet was fully restored by Friday morning.
The outage serves as a reminder of the complex nature of the internet and the potential consequences of issues with major providers like GCP.
