Wildfires Rage Across Greece and France

A wildfire burned in Athens’ northern suburb of Kryoneri on Saturday, forcing some residents to evacuate. The fire service reported that the blaze had damaged homes and was spread by strong winds and dry conditions. At least 52 wildfires broke out across Greece in the past 24 hours.

Greek authorities asked for additional firefighting planes from the European Union’s civil protection mechanism as they battled three other major fires on islands Crete, Evia, and Kythera. The country has faced a surge of wildfires in recent years, with many breaking out over the past month.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out in France’s Aude region near the Spanish border, forcing the evacuation of two campgrounds and local housing. Strong winds fueled the blaze, which burned through 600 hectares of land before being brought under control by 630 firefighters backed by planes.
