A heatwave is raging across southern Europe, fueling dozens of wildfires that have forced thousands to flee their homes. Red heat alerts have been issued in parts of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Balkans, warning of significant health risks.
Spain’s temperatures are expected to reach 44C (111.2F) in Seville and Cordoba, with winds over 70km/h driving flames near homes. The country has deployed nearly 1,000 soldiers to battle the fires. In neighboring Portugal, firefighters battled three large wildfires, with temperatures forecast to hit 44C.
Italy and Greece are also struggling with severe heatwaves. Italy’s heatwave has already claimed one life, while Greece faces over 100 wildfires, stoked by fierce winds. Mass evacuations are underway on touristic islands like Zakynthos and Chios.
Scientists say global warming is making Mediterranean summers hotter and drier, fuelling longer and more intense fire seasons. The UK is also experiencing its fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures hitting 33C and amber and yellow heat health alerts in place for all of England.
