Will Free Checked Bags Be a Rare Species on Domestic Flights?

Free checked bags are becoming increasingly rare on domestic flights, with budget airline Frontier offering a limited-time promotion of a free checked bag for passengers. This move is seen as a response to Southwest’s decision to end its free-bag policy.

For travelers, there are several ways to beat bag fees, including earning airline credit cards that include the benefit of at least one free checked bag. These cards often come with additional travel perks, such as earlier boarding.

Southwest is taking reservations for flights through Nov. 1, but its schedule through Jan. 5 will go on sale this month. Fliers should book summer, fall, and holiday flights under the current free-bag policy to avoid missing out on lower fares closer to their dates of travel.

Travelers can also consider paying for the most expensive tickets or airfare bundles, which often include at least one checked bag. Alternatively, earning elite status with an airline can provide a free checked bag.

However, some airlines are making it harder to get elite status, so travelers should weigh their options carefully. The military benefit is also available for active-duty military traveling for leisure, but check with the airline on its policy for dependents and any identification required.

Finally, considering Frontier’s promotion and using the “gate check” hack can help save money on bag fees. However, experts warn that this method may slow down boarding processes and create a kerfuffle among passengers.
