A fast-moving brush fire on New York’s Long Island, fueled by high winds, has prompted the evacuation of a military base and closure of a major highway. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency as the fire spread through the Pine Barrens, threatening homes and businesses. Three out of four fires were fully contained, but one firefighter was treated for burns.
The National Guard provided air support by dropping water on the flames, while Suffolk County officials attributed the fire’s rapid growth to strong winds. The Town of Southampton issued a warning against starting recreational fires, as satellite data showed the blaze stretching over 2.5 miles along Sunrise Highway.
