Microsoft has issued a warning to users not to delete a security fix folder after a recent update introduced confusion among users. The “inetpub” folder was created as part of the update, which aimed to patch a vulnerability in the Windows Update Stack.
However, the original advisory failed to explain that the folder was intentionally created and should not be deleted. Microsoft has since corrected the mistake by updating its support documents to clearly state that the folder is a necessary component of the security fix.
Meanwhile, some users have reported issues with Office 2016, including crashes in Word, Excel, and Outlook when trying to create new documents or spreadsheets. A fix for this issue has been released, which requires installing both updates KB 5002700 and KB 5002623.
Users are advised to be cautious of unnecessary complexity added by Microsoft’s regular upgrades and to keep an eye on specialist Windows websites before worrying about changes in their PC’s behavior.
It is worth noting that while the “inetpub” folder may seem harmless, it is linked to a security patch for a bug titled CVE-2025-21204, which allows attackers to modify system files or folders. Microsoft recommends keeping this folder intact as part of its efforts to protect users from potential threats.
