The run box is an old feature in Windows, but it’s due for a update. Microsoft may introduce two run boxes in the upcoming version of Windows 11. The new dialog will be modernized and similar to PowerToys Run tool, which offers more functionality beyond just launching programs.
The new run box is not enabled by default and can be accessed through Settings > System > Advanced > Run dialog. For now, it’s hidden in build 26534 and consecutive builds may follow. However, the classic Ctrl-Shift-Enter hotkey for running in admin mode will still be available.
Users often rely on the run box to quickly access File Explorer or run regedit. Some even use it as a temporary “typing receptacle” when text can’t be selected. With two run boxes, users may have more options to choose from.
Note: For those who use the run box regularly, the introduction of a modernized version might not be a bad thing. It could bring some much-needed improvements and functionality. However, it’s unclear if Microsoft will keep both or replace one with another.
