Windows 11 Update Breaks File Explorer with Glitches

Microsoft’s latest update has introduced a slew of problems for Windows 11 users, with File Explorer being one of the most affected. The February Patch Tuesday update, KB5051987, aimed to resolve various bugs but has instead brought issues such as file explorer failure, installation glitches, and more.

The update addressed several security vulnerabilities and fixed issues with digital audio converters, USB audio drivers, and passkeys. However, users have reported troubles with File Explorer failing to respond when trying to open folders like Desktop, Documents, or Pictures. In some cases, the issue persists even on plain vanilla systems without third-party customizations.

Other glitches include problems with installation, with the update sometimes getting stuck at 96% or not installing at all due to missing or problematic files. Some users have also reported issues with their MSI-based systems, where the update gets stuck at 0%.

To resolve some of these issues, clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder is suggested. Users are advised to wait for several hours or overnight for the installation to finish on its own.

Additionally, users may encounter other problems such as a stuttering mouse, undetectable camera, .NET apps not installing in Windows Sandbox, and Taskbar preview animation not working properly. Some users have reported changes in battery life, clipboard history, and random issues that resolve after reboots.
