Windows Edit Reveal: Developer-Focused Tool & More

Microsoft is introducing a new command-line application called Windows Edit (Edit) as part of its efforts to provide developers and enthusiasts with tools tailored to their needs. The primary focus lies in WinGet, a command-line tool debuted in 2021 for quickly grabbing apps and dependencies from the internet.

WinGet’s key updates include:

– A single, reliable “WinGet Configuration” command that allows developers to capture the current state of their device, including apps, packages, and tools.
– Support for Microsoft’s Desired State Configuration (DSC v3) in summer 2025.
– Advanced settings within Windows, including longer path lengths and more modular settings.

Windows Edit is currently open-source and will be integrated into Windows this summer. It enables developers to edit files directly in the command line, minimizing unnecessary context switching. The tool also leverages PowerToys and Command Palette for improved functionality.

Additionally, Microsoft is making its Windows Subsystem for Linux open source, marking a significant move towards developer collaboration.
