Microsoft has made it easier for Windows 11 users, including those at home, to access the powerful security feature known as Administrator Protection. The latest Windows Insider Canary build (build 27774) now allows users to turn on the feature from the Windows Security settings, removing the need for IT administrators to activate it.
This change is part of a broader effort by Microsoft to improve user security and reduce the risk of privilege escalation attacks. Administrator Protection first appeared in the Windows 11 Insider Canary build in October 2024 and aims to ensure users operate with the least privilege required.
When enabled, the feature prompts users for authorization when they need administrator privileges, granting “just-in-time” administration access for a specific process or activity. The feature is currently off by default, but its introduction marks an important step towards making it more accessible to all Windows 11 users.
Microsoft has also made some other changes to the feature, including adding color-coded regions to the authorization prompt and extending the app description to grab user attention. While there is no indication of when this feature will be enabled in generally available builds, Microsoft intends to make it a default feature in the near future.
