Windscribe VPN’s server was seized by Dutch authorities without a warrant. The company says no user data will be compromised due to its no-log policy. But experts warn that RAM-only servers are not a foolproof solution.
Windscribe reported the incident on social media, saying law enforcement acted “without a warrant”. No user data should be compromised thanks to Windscribe’s use of RAM disk servers, which store data in memory and instantly delete it when powered off or rebooted. However, experts say this is not a reliable method for protecting user data.
A Senior Security Researcher at Citizen Lab pointed out that hotplugs allowing authorities to seize servers without cutting power are commonplace. The incident highlights the need for strong privacy protections, such as no-log VPNs and RAM-only servers.
