Wine a Day May Cut Heart Attack Risk by Half

A new study in Spain has found that moderate wine consumption, defined as half a glass to one glass per day, may significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The research, led by Professor Ramon Estruch from the University of Barcelona, involved 1,232 participants who adhered to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and fish.

The study revealed that moderate wine consumption lowered the risk of severe cardiovascular events by 50% compared to those who drank little or no wine. Light drinking, defined as one glass per week, also seemed to lower the risk by 38%.

However, excessive drinking, defined as more than one glass per day, had no protective effect and may even increase the risk of heart complications.

Experts caution that while moderate wine consumption may have health benefits, it is essential to note that the evidence is limited and excessive drinking can be detrimental. The study’s findings support the UK’s current guidelines, which advise no more than 14 units of alcohol per week to minimize health risks.

It is crucial to distinguish between association and causation, as further research is needed to establish a definitive link between moderate wine consumption and reduced cardiovascular risk.
