Wisconsin’s total exports fell by 1.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, despite seeing significant increases in shipments to Asia, Central America, and South America. The state’s exports totaled $27.51 billion, down from $28.06 billion in the prior year.
The decline was driven by a decrease in exports to Canada, where sales dropped by 6.4% to $1.42 billion, and Europe, where exports fell by 9.8% to $13.14 billion. Notable decreases included items such as ethyl alcohol, civilian aircraft parts, and lawn mowers.
However, there were bright spots in Europe, with exports to Germany increasing by nearly 19%, sales to Ireland rising by 11%, and shipments to Poland growing by 9%. Exports to Asia also saw gains, with China experiencing a 4% increase to $1.55 billion and the rest of Asia seeing a 6.9% boost.
In contrast, exports to Central America and South America surged, driven by increases in Brazil and other countries. The decline in Wisconsin’s exports was the first year-over-year drop since 2020 and left the state ranked 33rd in terms of export growth.
