A new comet, C/2025 F2, nicknamed SWAN25F, has been officially designated by the Minor Planet Center on April 8, according to Earthysky.org. Co-discovered by Vladimir Bezugly from Ukraine and Michael Mattiazzo from Australia, the comet was named after the SWAN Instrument used in its detection.
Sky watchers can catch a glimpse of the comet by looking east-northeast before sunrise, with binoculars or a telescope enhancing their chances of observation. The brightest star in the Great Square, Alpha Andromedae (Alpheratz), serves as a reference point for locating the comet. A close approach to this star is expected on April 13, 2025.
In a few weeks, SWAN25F will make its closest approach to the sun, potentially emerging during sunset views in May if it survives the solar encounter.
