Residents of Rochester are in for a treat as the city gets a front-row seat to the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. The meteor shower is expected to peak around mid-August and will be visible in the night sky until the end of the month.
The Perseid Meteor Shower can produce up to 30 meteors per hour, with some burning so bright that they can be seen even through heavy city lights. Dan Schneiderman, community engagement manager for the Rochester Museum & Science Center, has noticed an increase in interest in celestial events and astrophotography.
To celebrate this spectacle, the RMSC will host Perseid Fest on its grounds on August 1-2. The event will feature lectures, workshops, and access to the museum’s telescopes for viewers to take in the show. Schneiderman emphasized that astronomy is an accessible field, all it takes is stepping outside and looking up.
Attendees can choose between joining a crowd or viewing the meteor shower solo. Perseid Fest aims to foster a sense of community and appreciation for shared experiences.
