Witness the ‘Buck Moon’ this Thursday, July 10

This week’s full buck moon will make its debut on Thursday, July 10, marking the first full moon of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The name “buck moon” comes from the antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead during this time.

The full moon will reach its peak at 4:38 p.m. EDT on Thursday and will be visible as it rises in the eastern horizon just after sunset. For optimal viewing, find an elevated location with a clear view of the eastern horizon, such as an open field or coastline.

This summer’s full moon is one of the lowest-hanging of the year due to its position opposite the sun. As a result, it will only be visible for a short time in the sky.

Residents of different regions can use a moonrise calculator to determine the best viewing times. For example, New York can expect sunset at 8:29 p.m. EDT followed by moonrise at 8:54 p.m. EDT on Thursday, while Los Angeles can expect sunset at 8:07 p.m. PDT followed by moonrise at 8:33 p.m. PDT.

The full buck moon is one of 12 scheduled for this year, with three designated as “supermoons” and two marked as “blood moons.” The next full moon will be the sturgeon moon on Saturday, August 9, marking the second summer full moon in the Northern Hemisphere and winter full moon in the Southern Hemisphere.
