Meteor-watchers will experience a spectacular display of shooting stars this month and next, thanks to the peak of the Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower. The annual event is expected to produce up to 25 meteors per hour in dark skies.
While the bright waning gibbous Moon may hinder views of other showers like the Perseids, which peak on August 12-13, the Southern Delta Aquariids offer a moon-free viewing experience from July 30th. The shower’s radiant appears relatively low in the sky, making it best visible from southern states and tropical regions.
To maximize your viewing experience, find a dark location with minimal light pollution and dress warmly for the late-night chill. With so many meteor showers active during this time, including the Alpha Capricornids and Anthelion meteors, there’s plenty of opportunity to spot some shooting stars without special equipment.
