Witnessing the 2025 Sturgeon Moon and Its Celestial Encounter

The Sturgeon Moon rises on August 9th at 21:13 BST, offering a rare opportunity for stargazers worldwide to witness this beautiful full Moon in the sky. The Moon will be visible in the southeast around 9 pm, eventually setting in the southwest after sunrise on August 10th.

This month’s full Moon is also notable for its lunar meeting with the Solar System planets. As the Moon tracks eastward across the night sky, it will encounter Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury, creating a celestial parade of moon-gazing opportunities.

The Sturgeon Moon marks the beginning of this lunar-Solar System encounter, which continues throughout August. On the evenings of 11-13 August, the Moon will be close to Saturn, and from 15-17 August, it will pass by the Pleiades star cluster. The early hours of August 18th will also see the Moon forming a line with Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter.

As the Moon continues its eastward journey, it will eventually disrupt this alignment on August 20th. However, on August 21st, the Moon will form a beautiful triangle with Venus and Jupiter, while on the early morning hours of August 22nd, it will meet Mercury once more.

This month’s full Moon is also an excellent opportunity to observe the Moon illusion, where the Moon appears enormous when close to the horizon. Furthermore, the Sturgeon Moon offers a chance to spot lunar rays and other celestial features.
