Wizards of the Coast has apologized for issuing a DMCA takedown notice to creators of the popular Baldur’s Village mod for Stardew Valley. The notice was sent despite having personal approval from Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios.
The company stated that the notice was issued “mistrustedly” and will be rectified immediately to allow fans and the gaming community to continue enjoying the mod. The DMCA takedown notice had already gone through moderation review since March 29th on Nexus Mods, a platform hosting user-created content for Stardew Valley.
The decision has been met with skepticism from fans who have criticized Wizards of Coast in the past over issues such as copyright infringement and lack of communication. Despite this, Larian CEO Swen Vincke had previously endorsed Baldur’s Village as “Amazing work!”.
It remains to be seen whether the apology will alleviate concerns among fans, but it is clear that the mod’s creators have a dedicated following. With Swen Vincke’s endorsement, the community has rallied behind the mod, making its removal likely to face significant backlash from those who support it.
