The highly anticipated horror film “Wolf Man,” directed by Leigh Whannell, is set to battle it out with the comedy-drama “One of Them Days” for the top spot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. According to projections, “Wolf Man” is expected to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues, while “One of Them Days” is anticipated to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters.
Despite the devastating wildfires that ravaged parts of Los Angeles, a major theatrical market in the US, attendance appears to be unaffected. However, businesses near the fire outbreaks have seen a significant decline of around 50%. The film’s success hinges on its ability to capture audiences’ attention and overcome the challenging horror genre landscape in 2024.
“Wolf Man” is part of Universal’s efforts to revive classic monsters, following the mixed results of their previous monster-themed films. Director Whannell’s success with “The Invisible Man” suggests that this new take could also find success. The film boasts a budget of $25 million, significantly lower than previous monster revivals.
In contrast, “One of Them Days” serves as counterprogramming to “Wolf Man.” Directed by Lawrence Lamont and starring Keke Palmer, the R-rated buddy comedy follows two roommates racing against time to avoid eviction after one of their boyfriends steals their rent money. With a budget of $14 million, Sony has kept costs low in an effort to attract audiences.
As the box office competition heats up, it remains to be seen which film will emerge victorious and which will fall short.
