Wolf Moon 2025: Rare Supermoon and Celestial Events

The first full moon of 2025, known as the wolf moon, is set to take place on Monday. This lunar phase comes with several celestial events that will make it an exciting time for stargazers.

According to NASA, this month’s moon is part of four consecutive supermoons, making it a particularly eventful occurrence. However, the full moon’s name originates from cultural traditions rather than scientific evidence, as Caroline Simpson, an astronomy professor, explained.

The wolf moon gets its name because wolves are more likely to be heard during winter, but there is no connection between their howling and the moon’s celestial phases. The name may have been brought to North America by European settlers, which has led some to question its accuracy.

During Monday’s full moon, the moon will appear full for around three days and will be opposite the sun at 5:27 p.m. ET. This event reveals the moon’s full dayside to Earth.

One of the highlights of this lunar phase is a rare celestial event – Mars’ occultation. On Monday night, Mars will be covered by the moon due to an alignment known as an occultation. Although Mars won’t disappear, it will be hidden behind the moon. The phenomenon can be seen in cities with light pollution and through hazy or partly cloudy skies.

Another notable occurrence is a rare comet sighting near the constellation Sagittarius. C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) has an orbit that spans 160,000 years, making its appearance a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some. However, viewing the comet might be better suited for advanced backyard astronomers due to its proximity to the sun.

The wolf moon and other celestial events offer a unique chance to observe these phenomena in the night sky. Make sure to get a clear view by covering your eyes with your thumb if necessary, using binoculars or a telescope for a closer look.
