Wolves Scared Away by “Marriage Story” Audio in Oregon Livestock Disturbances

A bizarre solution to a difficult problem is working in southern Oregon, where wolves are being scared away from livestock herds using audio clips from the movie “Marriage Story”. The audio, featuring a famous row between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, was broadcast via drones with thermal cameras to spot any wolf at night. The loudspeaker then plays alarming sounds like fireworks, gunshots, and people arguing.

The strategy was deployed in the Klamath Basin after 11 cows were killed by wolves in a 20-day period. However, over the next 85 days when drones were on patrol, only two cows were killed. It appears to be working, with some speculating that the wolves heard Kylo Ren’s temper tantrum and thought it was safer to leave.

This unusual method was suggested by Paul Wolf, a USDA district supervisor in Oregon, who said he wanted to scare off the wolves. The audio is played via quadcopters, which use thermal cameras to spot any wolf at night. AC/DC’s Thunderstruck is also used as part of the playlist.
