A woman in New Zealand is facing charges after a two-year-old girl was discovered in her suitcase on a bus. The incident occurred on August 3 in Kaiwaka, about 60 miles northwest of Auckland.
According to Local Detective Inspector Simon Harrison, the toddler was found when a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment during a planned stop. The driver became concerned and opened the suitcase, revealing the girl inside.
The child was hot but unharmed and is undergoing medical assessment at a nearby hospital. Police have not disclosed why the girl was in the suitcase or her relationship to the woman.
The 27-year-old woman has been charged and is due in court on August 4. The bus driver’s swift action is being praised, with Harrison saying he prevented what could have been a worse outcome.
