A woman was set alight in a tram in the German city of Gera on Sunday morning. The 46-year-old victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to hospital by helicopter.
Police are investigating the incident as attempted murder, with the suspect believed to be the woman’s husband. However, the motivation behind the attack remains unclear.
According to police, other passengers in the tram pressed the emergency stop button after the attack, allowing the suspect to escape. The driver reacted quickly and doused the flames with a fire extinguisher. The victim received medical treatment on the scene before being taken to hospital.
The other passengers and driver were offered psychological care as a result of the traumatic event. Gera is located in eastern Germany’s Thuringia state, approximately 60 km south of Leipzig.
