A Sonoma County woman is suing Costco Wholesale Corporation for $14 million after a large display fell on her at the Santa Rosa store, causing a traumatic brain injury. Sadie Novotny filed her lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court on April 29, alleging negligence and premises liability.
According to court documents, Novotny was a customer when “a large and heavy cabinet/bar or display” with thin legs fell from a defective wooden pallet and pinned her underneath. The complaint states she suffered injuries including a closed head injury and traumatic brain injury.
Novotny seeks $14 million in damages, which is scheduled to be heard in court on September 1. Costco has requested the case be moved to the US District Court, Northern District of California, citing its Washington state-based location as the reason.
