A Russian woman, Svetlana Dali, who was previously charged with stowaway on a vessel or aircraft without consent, has been apprehended again by authorities. This time, she attempted to sneak into Canada.
Dali, a US permanent resident, managed to cut off her ankle monitor on Sunday and was taken into custody Monday while on board a Greyhound bus bound for Canada. She is now in FBI custody and expected to be turned over to US Marshals in Buffalo, New York, on Tuesday.
Dali had previously been charged with one count of stowaway related to the November 26 incident on the Paris-bound Delta flight. She was released without paying bail but faced conditions, including not traveling outside a designated area.
Despite concerns about her release, Dali’s attorney successfully argued that she is not a serious risk of flight. However, prosecutor Brooke Theodora stated that Dali posed a security breach and raised national security and safety concerns.
Dali had filed two lawsuits alleging she was the victim of military-grade chemical weapons and a kidnapping plot. She had applied for asylum in France but was removed from a Delta flight to New York after creating a disturbance before takeoff.
The FBI reviewed surveillance footage at JFK Airport, showing Dali was turned away at a security checkpoint due to not having a boarding pass. However, she returned and was able to get past the TSA checkpoint by using an employee lane. She then hid in a bathroom to remain undiscovered until French police boarded the plane upon landing.
Dali’s next court appearance is scheduled for Buffalo before her return to Brooklyn.
