Wordle Tips & Tricks to Solve Today’s Puzzle

Wordle, the popular word-based game, was invented by Josh Wardle as a puzzle for his girlfriend. Released in October 2021, it quickly gained hundreds of thousands of players before being bought by The New York Times.

In Wordle, players guess a secret five-letter word within six tries. The game provides color-coded feedback: green indicates the correct letter in the right position, yellow means the letter is in the word but wrong, and gray signals the letter is not in the word.

Linguistics expert Noël Wolf praises Wordle’s simplistic nature, making it accessible to players of all ages. She notes that daily challenges and social media shareability foster a sense of community and connection among players.

Wordle provides daily conversations and a break from high-paced lives. The game’s small victories can contribute to feelings of achievement over time. With simple and interactive gameplay, users learn without realizing it.

For today’s puzzle (December 17), hints include: the answer is a noun and verb; no repeated letters; contains one vowel; synonyms are “glower” and “grimace”; and no “I” in team or puzzle. The answer to Wordle #1,277 is “scowl,” defined as a facial expression of displeasure.

If you didn’t solve it, don’t worry! Newsweek will provide more hints and tips for each new game. In the meantime, try other word-based puzzles like Typochondria and Spellspire.
