London — A fire at a nearby electrical substation has forced London’s Heathrow Airport to shut down for the day, affecting an estimated 200,000 travelers. The incident marks the latest disruption to international air travel.
According to OAG, which tracks global flight data, the world’s busiest airports in March 2025 are as follows:
1. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (US) – with a capacity of nearly 5.4 million seats.
2. Dubai International (UAE) – closely followed by Haneda Airport outside Tokyo, Japan.
3. Dallas Fort Worth International (US) – ranking third with over 4.1 million airline seats available.
Heathrow comes in fifth, but the airport swapped positions with Dallas Fort Worth between March 2024 and this month.
The top 10 busiest airports globally are:
6. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (China)
7. Denver International Airport (US)
8. Delhi Airport (India)
9. Chicago O’Hare International (US)
10. Baiyun International (China)
Notably, while Heathrow is not the busiest by seat capacity, it remains the world’s best-connected airport, with the most destinations served and scheduled connections.
The largest airport in terms of footprint belongs to Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd International Airport, covering 300 square miles. In contrast, Heathrow spans just under five square miles.
