World’s Largest Hindu Gathering Sparks Concerns Amid Devotion

Hindu devotees flock to India’s Prayagraj city for Maha Kumbh Mela festival.

A massive crowd of 400 million people is expected to attend the festival, which began on January 13 and ends February 26. The event, held every 12 years, brings together thousands of Hindu holy men, or sadhus, from across India.

The Triveni Sangam confluence of three holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati – is the main attraction for devotees seeking spiritual liberation through purification rituals.

Following a fatal crowd crush last month, safety concerns have been raised, but thousands continue to gather in the city to bathe in sacred waters and participate in traditional practices.
