World’s Oldest Person Dies at 116 Years Old

Tomiko Itooka, a supercentenarian from Japan, has died at the age of 116, according to Guinness World Records. Born on May 23, 1908, Ms Itooka was recognised as the world’s oldest person last year after Maria Branyas’ death. The Gerontology Research Group lists her as the current record holder.

Ms Itooka lived a full life, enjoying hobbies such as volleyball and mountaineering. She was married at 20 and had two daughters and two sons. During World War II, she managed her husband’s textile factory, before living alone in Nara after his death in 1979. Ms Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren.

Her passing marks the end of an era, with Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas now taking the record as the world’s oldest person, born just 16 days after Ms Itooka.
