Writers Call for Ceasefire in Gaza Amid ‘Genocidal’ Actions

Renowned writers Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, and Russell T Davies are among over 400 authors who have signed an open letter condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocidal”. The letter urges an immediate ceasefire and calls for the international community to take action.

The letter, organized by writers Horatio Clare, Kapka Kassabova, and Monique Roffey, describes Israel’s military campaign as aiming to destroy the Palestinian armed group Hamas and extract hostages. However, Israel has denied allegations of genocide, which are being examined by the International Court of Justice.

Since October 2023, over 1,200 people have been killed in Gaza, with at least 54,056 people losing their lives, including 3,901 in the past 10 weeks, according to Hamas’ health ministry. The situation has worsened, with half a million people facing starvation in the coming months.

The authors stress that genocide is not just a slogan but carries legal, political, and moral responsibilities. They reject antisemitism and anti-Jewish prejudice while standing in solidarity with Palestinian, Jewish, and Israeli people resisting genocidal policies. The letter also calls for sanctions if Israel fails to take action.
