Kilmar Abrego Garcia was wrongfully deported to a high-security prison in El Salvador but now faces deportation to another country. According to sources, Abrego may be removed to Uganda no less than 72 hours absent weekends. His lawyers claim it is “preposterous” that he would be sent to Africa, where he doesn’t speak the language and there are documented human rights violations.
Abrego was previously released on parole after serving nearly half a year in federal custody, but immigration authorities informed him of potential deportation to Uganda less than 24 hours later. His lawyers argue that this is an attempt by the Trump administration to force Abrego to choose between a guilty plea or being sent to Uganda.
The US government has offered Abrego a plea deal to deport him to Costa Rica, which his lawyers see as a more reasonable option. With a protective order from 2019 preventing deportation back to El Salvador due to gang violence concerns, Abrego’s lawyers believe that deportation to another country is possible.
However, the White House continues to berate Abrego, accusing him of being a violent gang member and threatening to take action against him until justice is served.
